Laani

The only country I ever make lore for

The History

Laani was already a country even before the Varenmere Conquest. It was first established by a man named Claude the Mighty, who named the country and, at the time, capital after his wife, Laani. He was a giant man, standing at over seven feet tall, with broad shoulders and an impressive, long, brown beard and hair. The coastal City of Laani started out as a simple village, the first people that lived there would survive by fishing and hunting, but the place eventually became a very well known port town. The Laani Harbor became one of the greatest harbors on the continent, however this did not last long because of the Varenmere Conquest. Nowadays the harbor is a place where pirates and the Sons of Oceans mercenaries are settled. In the year 2 AV the capital was moved from the CoL to Graybliss. It has stayed this way to this day.

Laani Campaign, The Great Incendiary War

12th February 1960

The Hounskull Men from Alephad have attacked Laani from the eastern border. The attack was sudden and unprovoked. The Smiling Men from Graybliss have quickly gotten to the border to aid the border control armies, however they were too late, as the Alephadians have already killed a lot of people by the time they got there.

6th March 1960

The Hounskull Men have taken over a large portion of Laani. Alongside that, a lot of major factory cities, as well as small villages, were burned down to ash.

23rd September 1960

The government of Laani has put a large amount of funds into weapons production and troop training. The economy had drifted downhill, with everything becoming incredibly expensive. The first ever use of firearms in actual warfare.

30th April 1961

The Hounskull men start the usage of heavy artillery. At first setting cannonballs on fire, soon switching to explosive ballistas and even primitive high speed missile like weaponry.

4th January 1962

The Hounskull Men have surrounded the entirety of Laani, with the northern siege reaching even Mottenberg. Trench warfare is becoming more popular.

15th – 26th January 1962 - Battle of Mottenberg

The White Cross Military Regiment WCMR was the main army of Mottenberg at the time, with troopers gathered by Cpt. Salvador Kawarlia. They were an unofficial brigade of roughly 1000 members, as it was not registered by any military personnel other than Kawarlia. They were the first army to use trench warfare in recorded history. The Hounskull Men were prepared to siege Mottenberg, however the people of WCMR managed to hold them back and make them surrender. After the battle, the group had moved onto protecting other cities, eventually becoming an offensive force. Cpt. S. Kawarlia was found and executed by the Hounskull men a few weeks after the battle. He was awarded the [highest order] in 1965, and each member of the brigade was awarded with [some other fancy medal].

17th October 1962

The first successful facial reconstruction surgeries have been performed on victims of war. One of the most notable surgeons who first performed those operations was Duster Euschter, who was also quite infamous in the army for being very indifferent about his patients.

12th May 1964

The end of war. A large portion of eastern Laani is still under the control of Alephad, with the new border going along the [river]. The part of Laani that is currently under Alephad’s control is referred to as the Enslaved Warband. Laani is still providing weapons to the people trapped there, but no active nor official warfare is going on between the two countries.

Notable Cities

Graybliss

Graybliss is the capital of Laani, simultaneously being one of the more technologically advanced out there. While there aren’t any great workshops that produce prosthetics there, they have something others could dream of, electricity. The town is powered up with the magic from a chipped magic crystal that is kept in the castle. Some say the crystal is a piece of the old earth guardian’s soul.

City of Laani

Its own article

The City of Laani used to be the capital of Laani, before it was moved to Graybliss. Nowadays it functions as the main adventurer town, where most of the quest notices go.

Mottenberg

A city dubbed the “capital of knowledge” by some, Mottenberg is well known for its universities and how often it births insane scientists.

Notable Villages

Amberlot

A rather large town surrounded by a mysterious amber colored mist and a maze of roads that lead nowhere. There’s many speculations on what the fog is, but no real consensus on what it actually is.

Chuleveska

One of larger seal mutant settlements in Laani. Home of Barney “Blubber” Timothy, one of the more well known mercenaries in CoL.

Gilford

A small town, located at the south of CoL, known for their yearly festival, which celebrates adventurers as heroes of this land.

Honeyville

A rather large village, well known for their honey business. It was founded in 1798 by the HayBale family. Nowadays, the descendants of the HayBale are still the ones in charge of the apiary, namely father and son, Constantin and Wilhelm. Constantin became infamous in the village as well as neighboring ones, for being a “werebear”. He is not cursed with lycanthropy, instead being cursed by a witch living in the nearby forest. The curse didn’t make him bloodthirsty, thus he kept it in order to protect his village from all the bears in the forest. People are now wary of him, but he does not mind the loneliness.

Morning Wood

A village where the first Moist Manticore tavern was built. It’s a popular place for new adventurers to go to and get their first quest, in case they haven’t gotten to the guild in Laani yet.

Other Establishments

The Glistening Woods

A lush forest where the dryads reside. It is also home to a circle of Druids of Rod. Popular destination for male (and some female) adventurers due to the dryads being very easy to seduce.
